5 Comments Recipes, Typically Swedish

Just whipped up a batch of classic Swedish chocolate balls, politically incorrect referred to as Negerbollar (literally Negro balls). Calling them Negro or Nigger balls might sound racist to say the least but the name for this pastry came about in the 60’s when there weren’t many black people living in Sweden and I guess Swedes thought they were a bit exotic. The name was officially changed to chocolate balls in the 70’s when people got more educated but the name is still in use in less formal circumstances and whether or not the word negerboll should be used has been a subject of debate in news papers and blogs. In 2003, a bakery owner from Sjöbo was reported to the Swedish Ombudsman against Ethnic Discrimination for using the word “negerbollar” on a sign in her bakery shop. However, the case was dismissed since the woman reporting it did not consider herself personally insulted. The word chokladboll (chocolate ball) was first added to the Swedish Academy’s dictionary in 2006, before it was only to be found under negerboll. Nowadays you can find the pastry under both names but with the addition “rather use chokladboll” to the negerboll entry.

Call them whatever you like, they are good that’s all you need to know. 🙂

If you want to try them yourself, here is a simple recipe:

  • 200 gram soft butter (not melted)
  • 2 dl sugar
  • 4 tbsp cocoa
  • 6 dl oats
  • 2 tbsp cold coffee

  • Coconut/nib sugar (sprinkles can also be used)

Mix and stir butter and sugar. Add cocoa and oats and stir til it’s all mixed to an even dough. Roll balls out of the dough, cover them with coconut/nib sugar/sprinkles. Put away in the fridge again for a while. Eat and enjoy them!

Don´t forget that it is illegal to call negro balls "chocolate balls" since they don´t contain enough chocolate. Remember that negro balls is a fine name for something black and sweet, however "nigger balls" is humiliating and disgusting. Btw, the name is older than the 60´s.

This post really made me giggle – for me they are still and always will be negerbollar, but I completely understand the uncertainty and hesitation when people want to order them! Had a quick peak at your blog, and love it. Completely resonates with me – I am currently living in Mexico after sustaining a long distance relationship between Singapore and Mexico…sometimes you just have to follow your heart 🙂

I know I’ll always call then negerbollar too! 🙂

I’m glad you found your way here and that you can relate. I think it’s the same no matter where you live. Mexico sounds exciting, do you like it there?

      Traveling Chopsticks.
You sound like the British ex-pats who claim that Zimbabwe will “always be Rhodesia.”
Your holding onto a racist name in a deaths-grip makes you seem uncultured and backward in your mentality.
Feel free to join the 20th century –you’re too far behind for the 21st.

Not sure if you read the blog post, given your comment I wouldn’t think so. Nowhere did I say that I call them Negerbollar. I just simply told the history behind it.
