Don’t bother! There isn’t a single Burger King restaurant in Australia. It’s actually the only country in the world where Burger King doesn’t operate under it’s own name. When the American company wanted to establish themselves down under back in 1971 they discovered that the business name already was trademarked by a takeaway food shop in Adelaide.Burger King provided the Australian franchisee, Jack Cowin, with a list of possible alternative name, pre existing trademarks already registered by Burger King and its then corporate parent Pillsbury, that could be used to name the Australian restaurants. Cowin selected the “Hungry Jack” brand name, one of Pillsbury’s US pancake mixture products, and slightly changed the name to a possessive form by adding an apostrophe “s” forming the new name Hungry Jack’s
When the trademark expired in the late 1990’s Burger King actually unsuccessfully tried to introduce the brand to the continent. After losing a lawsuit filed against it by Hungry Jack’s ownership, the company ceded the territory to its franchisee.
So don’t try to find a Burger King down under, just stop at the nearest Hungry Jack’s instead. Same shit, different name! 😛
